Pickedstones is a humble working farm which is situated in the heart of the Exmoor National Park along with a wild herd of red deer to watch from the outdoor seating area.
We have an abundance of wildlife including Roebuck, red deer, otter, foxes, badgers, Hares and Hawks to name a few!!!
The resident barn owl is a haunting site to see as the Sun drops over the heath and Cow Castle which is a historic settlement only one field away from Ernest.
A more secluded spot would be difficult to find where you can enjoy a tranquil time to recharge your body and soul and to remember what life is all about!
The farm is dating back to the 1500’s which is one of the oldest homesteads on the moor. It would have been the main drovers route running along the stunning river bowl from Landacre to Simonsbath. Today it is still used and is called the Two Moors way. The route has pubs and tearooms approximately 3 miles in either direction so ideal for a wander however it is hilly and although a main bridle path can have Shillett underfoot causing an even loose ground.
We have a private drive which is around 2 miles in length from the main road so please be aware that you will see more wildlife than humans!
Although this is a working farm it is very peaceful and quiet but we do have livestock and an abundance of wildlife so please ensure that any pets that join you on holiday are always under supervision and don’t have an opportunity to trace or harm any other animal
We have three large dogs on the farm but they will be secure during your stay
Upon arrival you will have a small welcome hamper with a selection of local produce that we will prepare once we know your preferences. The nearest village shop is about 4.5 miles. The main shopping areas are Taunton, Barnstable, South Molton and Minehead. Tesco’s, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose will deliver to the door.
There are some fantastic pubs and eating houses in the area such as The Crown Hotel in Exford, The Royal Oak situated in Withypool which is one of the pubs on the two moor way that I mentioned earlier
Ernest the bow top
Has Been handcrafted by ourselves and has taken a few years in the making! All the timber used in the bow top was sourced from a single Douglas Firtree and built onto a modern twin axle galvanised trailer for ease of moving. The roof has five layers of installation and breathable membrane is finishing with a traditional canvas so although the style is very traditional the build is full of up-to-date technology and mod cons such as the central heating, hot water, hob, oven and fridge, USB ports lighting etc........
The memory foam bed is incredibly comfortable and Ernest has really been built with two in mind although will sleep for and you’re more than welcome to use our four-man tent at a reasonable fee but will have no bedding supplied.
The Shepherds Hut
Is situated just below the barbecue area and hosts and Mira air boost sport Max shower which gives a good flow even though we are on our own supply of spring water...... Also a full flushing toilet cistern so no smelly portaloos here just a loo with an amazing view.
The shepherds hut has been created from and was in fact an old dry freight Lorry container! We have stripped it back and re-clad inside and out with insulation, full electrics and plumbing. Lighting heating and assisted fans are on timers so need no need to worry about turning the lights off etc
Ernest has two outdoor seating areas, one With soft furnishings and barbecue area sheltered under a high canopy of trees so dappled shade in the day and full sun comes through AM and PM. Secondly is a picnic area with a retractable so the it parasol with soft furnishings and barbecue area sheltered under a high canopy of trees so dappled shade in the day and full sun comes through AM and PM. Secondly is a picnic area with a retractable solar lit parasol which is a little further across the lawn and has full sun. Wood and starting sticks are provided for the first night for your fire pit/barbecue which has been made from and up cycled compressed air tank again by ourselves and a great friend Mr Skinner. More wood can be purchased as required.
The area is secure for larger pets but I daresay the terriers could escape!! You have access to our small paddock where the dogs may roam freely but please make sure they are under control at all times!
No pets are allowed in the Bow Top unattended. As you can imagine your pet may become stressed away from home and wanting to be with you which may cause an expected it damage and the way the bow top has been made it would create hundreds of pounds to rectify any chewed beams, seating and benches as all very yummy chewable would! All the local pubs are dog friendly or we could pop them in a stable if requested whilst you visit the local areas.
Horses are more than welcome as this area is amazing for hacking. There is no roadwork for miles as you have direct access onto the Moorland and we offer transport home if you want to ride further away and get a horse taxi back. The beach rides are also amazing here and are only about 50 minutes drive away. The farm has lovely old stables and individual Paddocks so please ask for pricing and availability.
Grooms service and escorted rides are also available.
